Getting your nails fit and healthy

Do you suffer with dry, brittle nails?

At Nail Kind HQ, we often get asked about how to keep your nails strong and healthy so we asked expert Lisa Howson from www.upbeatcare.co.uk, specialists in hand and foot products, to share her top tips on how to keep nails healthy.

Be gentle on your nails.

Your nails are delicate so avoid using rough nail files. When choosing a nail file opt for a soft texture and file the nail in one direction.

Cleaning with chemicals and washing dishes by hand can also weaken nails so use rubber gloves.

    Moisturise your nails and cuticles.

Cuticles are a seal of protection for preventing fungus, bacteria and infection, so it is very important that you take care of them.

Massaging your cuticles with a good moisturiser or nail oil helps to keep them hydrated, while preventing dryness and cracking, and minimise those dreaded hangnails.

Every once in a while massage the moisturiser or oil into your nails and cuticles to stimulate blood circulation and promote healthy nail growth.

    Give Your Nails a Break.

If your nails are dry or brittle, it may be time for a detox. Nail varnish breaks are beneficial, leaving your nail polish on for too long can lead to keratin granulation and nail discolouration.

Wearing a base coat under your polish, such as Nail Kind Natural Base Coat, helps to prevent staining especially from darker nail polish shades.

    Prevent nail fungus.

Your shoes are damp and warm environments for bacteria and fungus to grow, creating the perfect environment for fungal nail infections to develop on your toe nails.

Keeping your feet clean and dry as well as wearing flip flops in communal showers and the pool will prevent problems like athletes foot spreading and causing fungal nail infections.

Eat Foods & Vitamins that strengthen nails.

Adding nutrients in your daily diet to help strengthen your nails like Biotin, Iron, B and C vitamins, can help keep your nails healthy. Foods rich in these nutrients are eggs, salmon, chicken, nuts, seeds.
